the shifter on my 1986 Mazda rx7 shakes at idle and has a LOT of play, is this a sign of transmission wear or anything else I should be worried about? Also, does anyone know how to fix this?
edit for clarity: the shifter not only vibrates at idle but is very sloppy during gear changes

Being a RWD car, that shifter is pretty much directly connected to the transmission. If it's a new problem, you may want to replace the bushings on the shifter. You're always going to get more vibration on a longitudinally mounted car compared to an FWD car, where the shifter is remote to the transmission and actuates it via rods or cables.

maybe take a look at the motor mounts if they're worn out the engine and trans (in-turn the shifter) will more around more

I would check the bushings in the shifter. My old VW Fox became almost unshiftable when the bushings wore out. Worked like a champ when they were replaced, and it wasn't terribly expensive (this was about 17 years ago, though).

Shifter bushings would be #1 cuplrit. If it's moving a lot under load, it's more likely motor/transmission mounts.
